Some kicks are mainstays in the scene year in and year out {insert Jordan’s and Air Force Ones}. Other shoes styles have a tendency to infiltrate the marketplace for an indefinite period of time, forcing companies high and low to try to keep up with the times. Take 2009 for example. Last year saw the proliferation of the high top sneaker, ushered in by skate Shoe Company, Supra. The company’s flagship model, The Skytop, could be looked as the one single shoe that ignited the high top craze. Even Nike clamored to keep up with this new trend, releasing the year’s most ballyhooed sneaker, The Air Yeezy. But as time went on, companies raised the stakes literally, creating high top sneaks that nearly elicited nosebleeds from onlookers. As with any fad, interest wanes, hence the name. What will fill the void left by these wearable skyscrapers? This is where the running silhouette comes into play. Running shoes have always been in vogue. Think of the vatos that used to the rock the cortez’s back in the day. Now they seem to be on the precipice of being all the rage for 2010. Nike even seems to be a trendsetter in this case. They’re dusting off all the old 90’s classics, from the Air Pegasus to the Triax Structures. This trend has open the floodgates for companies that have specialized in running shoes for decades to flourish now where they may have plodded along in years past. Asics and New Balancehave been dropping their classic silhouettes in new color ways, opening them up to a whole new generation of sneakerheads. The two companies have been collaborating with websites and boutiques around the globe to drop limited runs of their more famous models in new ridiculous colorways and premium materials. Their recent successes illustrates the concept that you can in fact teach an old dog new tricks. What will be trend for 2011? Only time will tell. Maybe Fila or LA Gear will make a miraculous comeback like Mickey Rourke. Who knows?
